Axe Throwing 101

In recent years, the axe throwing sport has grown rapidly, spreading in popularity throughout North America. Today, it is a favorite bar game and sport that’s appropriate for beginners and seasoned axe throwing enthusiasts alike. The axe throwing sport is expected to only continue to rise in popularity, particularly among younger competitors. Axe throwing can be enjoyed casually, or competitively for more experienced players.

Axe Throwing Targets

Prior to playing, you’ll need to know some information about axe throwing targets. The sport is close to darts, and similarly, players’ objectives are to throw their axe as close as possible to the target to score the most points. As with darts, the player with the highest number of points wins the game.

In addition to the standard game, there are a number of different axe throwing games that participants enjoy playing. These include Bad Axe, First to “X”, Landmines, Cornhole, Around the World, Connect 5, Humans vs Zombies, and more.

In a standard game, axe throwing targets have the following:

Target Points

  • • Bullseye (6 points)
    • • Innermost ring, closest to bullseye (4 points)
    • • 2nd innermost ring (3 points)
    • • 3rd innermost ring (2 points)
    • • Outermost ring (1 point)

Killshot, two small dots on the outer ring (8 points). Players can only attempt the killshot at certain times during the game, namely, during the 5th and 10th round.

Axe Throwing Rules

To ensure your safety and that everyone has as much fun as possible for an epic night of Fort Worth axe throwing, you’ll want to know some basic axe throwing rules.

Gameplay

• For a standard game of axe throwing, there are ten rounds of throws, followed by the tiebreakers. This will vary depending on the type of game your party is playing.

• To determine the winner, the player with the highest number of points wins the game. This varies depending on the type of axe throwing game being played. In a standard game, the highest score possible is 64 points (8×6)+(2×8).

• For a standard game, the killshot is available to attempt on the fifth and tenth throws of the match.

How to Throw an Axe

How do I safely and correctly throw my axe?

Before you begin an axe throwing game, you’ll want to know some safety measures and best practices for throwing your axe.

To help, we offer a pre-game axe throwing tutorial to help players new to the sport learn the axe throwing rules before starting the game.

Learning the rules and practicing your throws will help you become a pro in no time!

• Before throwing your axe, make sure no one is standing too close or walking towards the target to collect their axe. Ensure you have a six foot radius surrounding you that is clear of other players. Have a “throw together, retrieve together” mindset when playing.

• Prior to throwing your axe, be sure to sharpen it. Sharpening your axe makes it stick to the target board easier, plus it also lessens the chance of a dangerous throw. Once you have sharpened your axe, DO NOT touch the blade directly, to avoid needing stitches on your hand and fingers. The sharper and thinner the profile of your axe, the easier it will stick to your target.

• Make sure you have a firm (yet light) grasp on your axe prior to throwing. This is similar to a grip on a baseball bat or golf club. Also ensure you keep the head of your axe as straight to the target as possible to prevent it from flying sideways.

Axe Throwing Techniques

One-Handed & Two-Handed Axe Throwing Techniques:

• Two-handed throw over the head. (Better for beginners). To execute a proper two-handed throw, you’ll want to grip the axe with both hands, bringing your axe back over your head. This is similar to throwing a soccer ball. Keep a light but firm grip on the axe with two clasped hands/fists (similar to holding a golf club.) A lighter grip is better than holding your axe tightly, because a harder grip makes it more difficult for when you need to release the axe. During the throw, bring your arms and axe forward and release once your hands line up at eye level. It is best to not use any wrist motion or to attempt to guide the axe throw with your fingers. Simply allow the axe to let go and follow its path to the target.

• One-handed throw over the shoulder. (More advanced). For a one-handed throw, align your right shoulder and foot (or left shoulder and foot) with the bullseye. To start the throw, you will swing your axe beside your leg and use that momentum to raise it up past the ear of the throwing hand. Now, aim and release the axe once your throwing arm is parallel to the floor. Don’t use any wrist motion or attempt to guide the throw with your fingers. The throw works best if you simply release your grip and allow the axe to follow its path to the target.

Tip: If you’re dropping your axe quite a bit with the one-handed throw, try the two-handed method to help you get more power in your throws.

Proper Distance from the Target:

To maximize your axe throwing experience, you’ll want to stand at the appropriate distance from the target. As a general rule, you’ll want to stand about 12 feet away from the target board. Depending on how far you are, you may want to adjust how close or how far away you’re standing.

If your axe isn’t landing flush with the target, that’s a sure sign you’ll need to adjust where you’re standing:

• Did your blade hit the board and was it flush with the target? You are standing at the perfect distance!

• If after the throw, the top of your axe hit the board, it was over-rotated. You’ll need to take a half step closer to the target.

• If the bottom of your axe hit the board, it was under-rotated. You should take a half step back away from the target.

You’re well on your way to throwing like a pro!
